The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 is nearly out so I wanted to share my thoughts about the Galaxy watch 5 before the launch. It took me a long time to buy into the smartwatch lifestyle, tracking tons of health data and of course making calls, responding to texts, and obviously watching YouTube videos from my wrist, they work kind of sorta well ish. I wasn’t very big on watches in general before I bought the Galaxy watch 5 but I’m really into Smartphones and Mobile Tech on top of wanting the health data that the watch was able to collect. With the watch 6 and watch 6 classic coming out, the watch 5 and all of its variants are marked down and there’s plenty available on the second hand market. After using the watch 5 for a while I find myself most interested in the pedometer, I really like that the watch enables accuracy without my smartphone while still giving me all of the other features. I don’t find myself taking calls very often but I do reply to texts on occasion which I like. The ECG and sleep data are definitely cool though, I normally check once or twice a week or more if I’m just bored. I wouldn’t say the battery life is great on Smartwatches in general being new to them so I would recommend it if your budget allows, get a model with better battery capacity. I find it’s too easy to forget to put the watch back on after a longer charging session even though I get the notification on my phone. I haven’t experimented much with aftermarket cases or bands yet but I think it could be worth it if you know you’ll have your watch on every minute of everyday, you probably want to be comfortable and have a unique look. I’ve tested 1 other smartwatch in the time that I’ve had the watch 5, I’d say that if you can afford the watch 5 or 6, the performance will be better than a budget Android watch for sure but, if your budget can’t go over 100 or even 60 bucks, there’s options out there for you. The main negative to a modern Galaxy watch 5 or 6 is really the low end capacity battery and the major fact that some health features, namely the ECG function, only work if you have a Samsung phone. This is definitely a bummer and honestly seems completely unnecessary considering the Pixel watch has no such restriction. So with all that being said, the watch 6 is coming out soon and watch 5’s are likely to be enticing second hand.. If you’re new to Smartwatches and you are sold on the Samsung life, meaning you have Samsung phones, I’d say give the watch 5 or 6 a shot. The UI is good, the battery life on upper trims is decent, and I like the over all feature set.
