Today we’re taking a look at the rugged dual layer case for the Google Pixel 8 from Tongate. Tongate had offered to sponsor this video and after taking a look at how beefy this case was, I happily agreed. This case features an inner layer made from a soft TPU material and a much more rigid and protective outer layer or shell. The soft TPU fits the Pixel 8 phone body perfectly and provides a nice amount of cushioning to help keep the phone safe in drop scenarios. The outer layer is solid as far as strength goes. I think from all of the cases I have tested, this outer layer is one of the top 5 most rigid which works really well to compliment the TPU inner layer. Combined, the outer and inner layers should provide excellent protection when it comes to ground impacts. The case also features bezels that provide about 3 millimeters worth of lift for the Pixel 8 screen. This means that if you drop your shiny Pixel 8 on your kitchen floor, in the basement, or off your desk at work, the glass screen won’t end up making a direct impact with a flat surface. Since the bezel of the case extends all around the perimeter of the phone, the case will make an impact and absorb and redistribute those forces protecting your screen. The bezels on the front side of a smartphone case are very important for overall protection so, I’m glad they are nice and tall here at 3mm. The sides, top, and bottom of the case have a great amount of material and structure, they look good to me. The corners are well protected here as well. In looking at the backside of this case, you will see that our camera protection strategy is twofold, we have the standard built up camera cutout region, but Tongate is including a sliding camera door here which is a welcome addition. The sliding door is about 2mm thick, and you can swipe it up or down with one finger. You should definitely pay attention to the camera protection system in any case you are looking to buy, I like this one. As for the rest of the back side, we do have a built-in metal ring stand. This seems like a very durable ring stand, I’m always setting my phones up with a video playing while they’re on my desk at home and the office while I do work, this is an under rated feature. The case does support magnetic accessories which is handy, especially for car mounting. As far as case feel goes, it’s nice, not too slick and the texture is not off putting at all in my opinion. No issues with the speaker or mic cutouts and USB-C charging was easy. This case does not have a USB-C protection flap though. In terms of wireless charging, I couldn’t get my Pixel 8 to charge wirelessly on my stand with this case unfortunately. I would like Tongate to keep the epic protection factor here but slim the case down just enough to allow for better wireless charging compatibility. I think this case is an extremely competitive option on the market as far as Pixel 8 cases go, I would definitely recommend this if you’re into ultra protective cases. I would say if you wanted to level up that protection even more, I would look into picking up a tempered glass screen protector as well. I think the Tongate case plus a glass protector would probably be among the most protective options you’ll have if you need that level of safety. If a super beefy case is enough though, I think you’ll be happy with this one.
